Course Title: Connecting Through a Screen: Mastering Virtual Communication
Target Audience: Remote and hybrid teams, managers of distributed teams, anyone who works online.
Duration: Half-Day Workshop (or 3 x 90-minute virtual sessions)
PART 1: The Unique Challenges of the Virtual Space
• Learning Objective: Identify and mitigate the specific barriers to effective virtual communication.
• Topics:
o The “Virtual Distance” and its impact on trust and cohesion.
o Combating Zoom Fatigue: Causes and strategies.
o The Amplification of Non-Verbal Cues (or lack thereof).
o Asynchronous vs. Synchronous Communication: When to use which.
PART 2: Mastering the Virtual Toolbox
• Learning Objective: Use technology intentionally to enhance, not hinder, communication.
• Topics:
o Video Conferencing Best Practices:
▪ Lighting, audio, and background.
▪ “On-Camera” etiquette: eye contact, engagement cues.
o Written Communication for Clarity:
▪ Writing effective emails and chat messages (Slack/MS Teams).
▪ Using emojis, gifs, and formatting for tone (proceed with caution!).
▪ The importance of over-communicating in writing.
o Collaboration Tools: Using shared documents (Google Docs, Notion) for transparent communication.
PART 3: Building Engagement & Rapport Remotely
• Learning Objective: Create psychological safety and human connection in a digital environment.

o Intentional Rituals for Connection: Virtual coffee chats, icebreakers, team check-ins.
o Facilitating Inclusive Virtual Meetings: Techniques for drawing out quiet participants and managing dominators.
